Just in time for the 4th of July holiday, Compassionate Planet is offering its readers a sneak peek at the results of WSPA's (World Society for the Protection of Animals) survey of major U.S. grocery store chains.
WSPA visited 200 stores belonging to the top 25 U.S. supermarket chains and recorded the quantity and quality of their humane food selection. Humane food includes products like "cage free" eggs, "USDA Organic" dairy and "free range" or "pasture raised" meats.
The following chains offer the best selection of humanely-labeled foods:
Whole Foods Market
Publix Super Markets
Shaw's Supermarkets
Hy-Vee
Ralphs
If you're planning a cookout or picnic over the holidays, and you eat meat, please choose from among those brands made from humanely raised animals. Here's a list of some of the humane options available and where they can be found. Or, check out WSPA's new grocery store database, offering 500 egg, dairy and meat labels carried by the major supermarket chains.
